The Anatomy of Brunch

Ever wondered what makes the perfect brunch? The answer is: a perfect balance of sweet and savory items. This combination provides the pleasures of both breakfast and lunch, while also slowly satisfying you rather than filling you up before you have a chance to indulge in all of the different dishes. Try out my favorite mix of sweet and savory brunch dishes on my "Brunch Anatomy" chart and enjoy!

Blueberry Turnovers
- 1 cup blueberries
- 1 cup blackberries; chopped
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 pckg puff pastry
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 egg
1.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, combine the blueberries, blackberries, sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon.
2.) Lay out the puff pastry and cut it into six squares.
3.) Spoon about 3 tbsp of the berry mixture onto one corner of each of the square.
4.) In a small bowl, whisk together the egg with 2 tbsp of water.
5.) Brush the egg wash around the edge of the puff pastry square and fold over the berries into a triangle.
6.) Press the sides together and use a fork.
7.) Brush the turnovers with the remaining egg wash and bake for 25 minutes.
Cheesy Potato Bake
- 3 russet potatoes; peeled and shredded
- 2 cups cheddar cheese; grated
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 cup potato chips' crushed
- salt and pepper
1.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine the grated potatoes, cheese, sour cream, and milk. Season with salt and pepper.
2.) Place the mixture in a casserole dish and top with potato chips.
3.) Bake for 45 minutes
Classic Quiche
- 1 package pie dough
- 6 eggs; beaten
- 2 cups heavy cream
- salt and pepper
1.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, mic together the cream and eggs then season with salt and pepper.
2.) Line a pie tin with the pie dough and poke the bottom with a fork. Pinch the sides to create a crust.
3.) Pour the egg mixture into the pie dough and bake for 45 minutes.
Maple Bacon and Sausage
- 10 strips bacon
- 10 link sausage
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
1.) Place a cooling rack on a cookie sheet.
2.) Line the cooling rack with bacon slices and link sausage.
3.) Brush the bacon and sausage with maple syrup.
4.) Broil on low for 35 minutes
Scallion Corn Biscuits
- 1 can creamed corn
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup butter; softened
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1/2 cup scallions; chopped
- 3/4 cup whole milk
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
1.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In an electric mixture, combine the butter, creamed corn, and honey.
2.) Add the egg and combine. Add the milk and stir on low speed.
3.) In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and baking soda.
4.) Add the flour mixture to the electric mixer and combine.
5.) Stir in the scallions.
6.) Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners. Fill each liner about 3/4 way full and bake for 25 minutes.
Coffee Cake Muffins
For the muffins:
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1⁄2 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 egg
- 1⁄2 cup milk
- 1 stick of butter
For the topping
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp flour
- 1⁄2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1⁄4 cup butter, melted
1.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and cinnamon.
2.) In an electric mixer, combine the butter and sugar.
3.) Add the egg to the electric mixture and combine. Add the milk and stir on low speed.
4.) Add the dry ingredients and combine.
5.) Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners. Fill each liner about 3/4 way full
6.) In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon with the butter.
7.) Top the muffins with the topping and bake for 25 minutes.
Morning Cheese Platter
- 1 wedge brie cheese
- 1 wedge gouda cheese; cubed
- 1 crusted goat cheese log
- 1 baguette; sliced
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 bunch grapes
- 1/2 cup blueberries
- 1/2 cup sugar
1.) Preheat the oven to 400 and brush each side of the sliced baguette with butter.
2.) Bake the crostini for 25 minutes.
3.) In a small saucepan, cook the blueberries with the sugar on medium heat for 10 minutes.
4.) Organize the cheese, crostini, and grapes on a cutting board. Spoon the blueberry compote onto the brie cheese and serve the platter.
